Gather Google Reviews to boost your exposure and ranking

Gather Google Reviews to boost your exposure and ranking

Reviews for your business are not just a way to showcase your happy customers and garner feedback about your products and services, they can also add to your SEO and improve search appearance and CTR (Click Through Rate).

google reviews

Google reviews in particular will help to show potential customers that you are a trustworthy business, operating in their local area. They can also act as a way to increase your presence online, by expanding your Google My Business entry on search results and Google Maps. Increasing exposure and the chance that your listing will be clicked over your competitors.

search stars

Teamed with some SEO coding and schema on your website, these reviews can be used to make your listings in search results stand out above those of your competitors. Product and company reviews can both be used in this way and really highlight your Google search result listing. You can either use a WordPress plugin or hard code the schema into your website.

It’s easy to get reviews from customers if you go about it the right way, make it easy for them, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes to do. Catch them at a good point in your relationship and send them a direct link to leave a review on your My Business page.

The easiest way to create the link is using the Google Review Link Generator on the White Spark website below. Simple enter your company name and find the corresponding Google listing, the website will then generate your specific link to direct customers to leave you a review.

https://whitespark.ca/google-review-link-generator/

You then need to send the link you’ve created to your customers by email, social media or even a text message if that works for them. Include a polite request, encouraging 5 stars and even a gesture of thanks if you see fit (don’t offer to pay for the review or anything as a direct result). Sit back and watch those glowing reviews flood in…

Get Google Reviews the easy way

For the less tech-savvy customers out there, that may be concerned about clicking an unfamiliar link, you could always create a customised Google Review Handout PDF which takes them through the process of manually creating a review and even a Google account if they need one. Include your company logo and contact details, just in case they get completely lost and need your help. See the link here for the Google Review Handout Generator.

How to get star ratings on Google search results

How to get star ratings on Google search results

Aggregate Rating Schema is what tells Google and other search engines… well… your aggregate rating, this is used as the basis to display stars in your google listing. This can be an accumulated number of ratings from several sources or just your Google My Business page reviews. If you don’t have any existing reviews and ratings, look out for an upcoming post on just that subject. Once this coding has been added to your website Google will add stars to your search snippet and display them below your search result title.

Why should I add my aggregate rating schema markup?

Showing 5 shiny gold stars in your search snippet is a sure fire way to increase conversions, stand out over your competitors listing and potentially receive more clicks over higher ranked listings. It still shocks me to this day, the number of websites that actually make use of this simple and easy to add schema markup, which will add stars to your listing snippet in Google search results.

According to a recent internet marketing study – The CTR of a position 2 ranking was about half that of a position 1 ranking. This can be virtually flipped on its head, with the simple addition of Aggregate Rating schema data which displays stars on your Google snippet.

How do I add stars to my Google snippet?

As well as your basic Website, Organisation and Local Business schema markup, you can just as easily add your Aggregate Rating schema markup, which will in turn provide the necessary code for the stars to show on your Google snippet.

If you’re running WordPress CMS, adding schema markup to your website couldn’t be simpler. There are several plugins that offer this function and here are the ones that White Rabbit thinks will work in most if not all scenarios:

Rich Reviews

Rich Reviews - Aggregate Rating Schema

Once configured correctly, this plugin will allow you to simply add new reviews with 5 star ratings to the back-end and they will be shown as your aggregate rating in Google rich snippets. Be sure to include the “aggregate snippet shortcode” in every page that you want the aggregate rating to appear for and you’re all set.

WP SEO Structured Data Schema

SEO Structured Data Schema

More complex and not quite as automated, yet far more versatile, this handy plugin will enable you to add all types of schema markup to your website, not just Aggregate Rating. Ad all the necessary Website, Local Business and Organisation schema as well as the other useful schema markup data options available like Services and Events.

What other Website Schema Data is available?

If you really want to delve into all the options available to you for marking up your website with Schema Data for Rich Snippets in your Google search listing, check out this fascinating infographic from Moz.

In case there is any doubt whether you need to add schema data to your website, watch this!

More on Twitter Cards and OpenGraph Markup in a future post…

Several studies have found that the click-through-rate (CTR) of a website can be vastly increased with Google Rich Snippets, giving you a chance to beat websites ranked in the top 3 positions. Putting Brighton’s Open Market on the (Google) Map!

Putting Brighton’s Open Market on the (Google) Map!

A regularly overlooked and yet truly fantastic part of Brighton – for shopping, eating or just hanging out – is the long standing and recently rebuilt Open Market in the bohemian London Road district. Until now this eclectic selection of local businesses was only visible if you actually visited the market in person, as of this week you can take a virtual tour of the whole market using Google’s Street View.

Street View Trusted Pro

Working with the new and dynamic management team at the market, who have an eye for a good marketing opportunity and understanding of how people now like to use the internet and truly explore an area before they decide to take a trip there. White Rabbit has created a virtual tour of the entire market, encompassing both the London Road and The Level entrances, the main market traders area, the upstairs studios and a few of the individual business units within.

See below to take a trip inside Brighton’s Open Market from either end:

Build Local Citations for SEO Boost

Build Local Citations for SEO Boost

Building citations is by far one of the best ways to impact local search result rankings and increase local traffic to your website. In addition to the boost provided for local searches by the Name, Address and Phone Number (NAP) listings, many of the same sites will give you a backlink as well.

Why do citations help my ranking?

Google and other search engines will crawl the internet, looking for any mentions of your company’s NAP. Any reference it finds, on a good quality website, will add to your page authority in the local area and increase your ranking for local searches.

How do I build citations for my website?

This part is simple, yet time consuming… you just have to create entries on lots of high domain authority directories, maps and other similar sites. More on that below…

Can I create more than one citation on each site?

If you have multiple locations it’s recommended to create a citation entry for each. If you don’t have an individual website for each of your business locations, you should at least have localised landing pages for each branch on your company website. Include content about the locale and contact details of the regional branch, driving directions, local photos or a map can help too.

People are far more inclined to use local services and buy locally, this is reflected clearly by the increase in popularity of “… Near Me” searches. Creating good quality backlinks and citations for your company’s localised pages, could be one of the strongest SEO techniques of the present day.

Check your current local citations for errors or duplicates

It’s always worth running a few citation checker tools, to see where you stand at present for local citations. Here are some of those very tools, that will check your local citations and tell you where you need to create new citations for your business, update existing citations or remove duplicate citations:

Watch this video from Moz all about local citations:

List of best UK citation websites for 2018

To aid you in your mission to create local citations for your business, taking out some of the hard labour searching for decent websites to list your company on, I’ve put together the list of directories below for UK based businesses to create as many citations as you like.

This is current data for 2018 and the citation directories are ordered by Domain Authority, giving the good quality directories with high DA more priority. Citation Value is a combination of domain authority, ease/speed of listing your business and the impact it has on your local search ranking, providing a more specific and deeper  insight into the power of each citation you can create.

Creating a listing in most of these citation directories below will give your website a considerable boost in local search results and put you ahead of your competitors for related search terms.
